An abundance of rich, black fruit aromas are underpinned by notes of mocha and delicate sweet spice. Vibrant, fresh and balanced with an elegant finish.
The 100% Tinta del País grapes come from the Fuentecojo, La Cueva and Otero Joven vineyards surrounding the winery in Anguix, Burgos in Ribera del Duero. They are planted on silt-loam soils at an elevation of 780 metres, where warm days and cool nights produce balanced fruit, with concentrated flavours and natural balancing acidity. Áster is committed to respecting and protecting the environment. In the vineyard, treatments are limited, investments have been made into clean energy sources and water is reused. Insect shelters have been installed in vineyards, promoting environmentally-friendly plant health defence while increasing the biodiversity in the vineyard. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness.
The grapes were meticulously selected. After gentle destemming and crushing, the grapes underwent alcoholic fermentation at a temperatures maintained at below 28°C. After 19 days' fermentation and maceration, the wine underwent malolactic conversion in French oak barrels with weekly bâtonnage over a two-month period. The wine was aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels (75%) and the remainder in second-use French oak. The wine was racked three times using traditional methods.
Áster shows all the spirit and character of Ribera del Duero. With a desire to craft modern, contemporary wines, the team at La Rioja Alta broadened their horizons to the Ribera del Duero region and found the ideal spot in Anguix, Burgos. The Tinta del País vines were planted in 1990 and the new winery Áster was built in 2000, which incorporates an elegant manor house, an outstanding vinification hall, holding up to 4,000 French and American oak barrels, and a winery equipped with all the latest technology. Winemaker Julio Sáenz uses judicious oak-ageing to add layers of spicy complexity to these award-winning and stunning wines, which are just bursting with purity of fruit.
