More info

The Grande Cuvée is an uncompromising cuvée, made from the oldest Grenache Noir grapes planted around the old oak tree on the estate's plateau plot. The Château de Berne vineyards are grown in two distinct entities in terms of geology and altitude. 80% of the vines are planted at the Triassic Plateau, at an average altitude of 300 metres on limestone soils. The cool nights at this elevation, combined with the limestone-rich soil, play a vital role in giving a smooth finish and structure to the wines produced in this region. The diurnal temperature difference of the Haut-Var allows the grapes to mature slowly, imparting greater freshness and aromatic finesse. On the plateau, limestone dominates and ensures good drainage of rainfall, enabling the vines to draw water from deep underground. This in turn imparts the renowned mineral character, which translates into great subtlety, salinity and tension on the palate. The remaining 20% of vines are located around the Château, where they are planted on light, sandy soils, which impart richness to the wines.

The grapes were harvested at night when the optimal balance between fruitiness and acidity was achieved, followed by a brief maceration in a closed press. The lees were stabilised for two weeks, with daily stirring, to release the aromas and achieve richness in texture. Fermentation took place in a combination of vats, oak and acacia casks. The wine spent six months ageing on fine lees, in stainless steel, vats and wooden casks, before being deftly blended to achieve perfect balance.

Château de Berne

Château de Berne has a long winemaking heritage, with traces of vine-growing dating back to Roman times. Today, the estate extends over almost 510 hectares of unspoilt countryside, of which, 150 hectares are dedicated to the vine. The vineyards are located in the Haut-Pays region, known as the ‘Provence of the Interior’, where the terroir consists of chalky limestone hills and valleys. Château de Berne is committed to protecting the natural environment, as well as the people who work there, and holds the High Environmental Value Level 3 sustainability certification. Since February 2021, the estate vines have also been certified as organically grown. Oenologist Alexis Cornu crafts wines with respect for nature and mankind, while fully expressing the Mediterranean terroir. The elegant wines offer aromatic complexity, remarkable finesse and are full of character. The square bottle is the emblem of Château de Berne, referring to the two-18th century square towers at the entrance of the estate.
