More info

The Kooyong vineyards are located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. This single-block wine is sourced from 0.75 ha of 25-year-old vines within, as the name suggests, the most sheltered of their vineyard sites. The lack of exposure to strong winds allows the vines to keep a rich green canopy until comparatively late in the ripening period. The vineyard (6.88 ha in total) comprises seven different parcels, with the same two parcels historically being selected for this wine.

The ferment, with a portion of whole bunches, occurred spontaneously with ambient yeasts, taking place in large-format wooden and concrete tanks, lasting seventeen days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques and puncheons (20% of which were new) and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked only once, with the total maturation period lasting fourteen months. It was then bottled without fining or filtration.

Kooyong

Kooyong Vineyard forms part of the Gjergja family estate, along with Port Philip Estate and is planted to 40 hectares of vines on well-drained, low-vigour sedimentary clay loams, about 50 miles south of Melbourne. The head winemaker Glen Hayley stepped down after the 2022 vintage, with Tim Perrin taking the lead from 2023. The rolling hillsides and varying aspects of the region create countless microclimates, perfectly suited to Burgundian grape varieties. The moderating effect of the ocean surrounding the peninsula contributes towards a cooler climate and ample rainfall, which ensures freshness, vibrancy and elegance in the wines.
