Fragrant aromas of raspberries, sour cherry and a slightly smoky quality open the nose. The palate builds with a solid core of red berries and sweet spice. The finish is focussed, with fine-grain tannins offering support to the peppery finish.
The Kooyong vineyards are located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. This single-block wine is sourced from 0.57 ha of 24-year-old vines on a gentle north-facing slope. These vines are the most exposed of all their Pinot Noir plantings, leading to low vigour and low yields.
This wine was fermented in large-format concrete and stainless-steel tanks. The ferment, with a portion of whole bunches, occurred spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted sixteen days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques (20% of which were new) and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked only once, with a total maturation period of fourteen months. It was then bottled without fining or filtration.
Kooyong Vineyard forms part of the Gjergja family estate, along with Port Philip Estate and is planted to 40 hectares of vines on well-drained, low-vigour sedimentary clay loams, about 50 miles south of Melbourne. The head winemaker Glen Hayley stepped down after the 2022 vintage, with Tim Perrin taking the lead from 2023. The rolling hillsides and varying aspects of the region create countless microclimates, perfectly suited to Burgundian grape varieties. The moderating effect of the ocean surrounding the peninsula contributes towards a cooler climate and ample rainfall, which ensures freshness, vibrancy and elegance in the wines.
