Complex aromas of dark fruits such as cherries, plums as well as violets and cedar, then a concentrated palate with cherries, spices, strawberries, a touch of cedar wood and gamey aspects. Very fine-grained tannins and a long, complex finish.
Fruit for this wine was hand-picked from particularly low-yielding vines in the biodynamically-farmed estate vineyard (cropped at approximately nine hectolitres per hectare).
The wine was made with 100 percent whole bunches and a pre-fermentation maceration of I-10 days. It then fermented in small open vats with wild yeast and daily plunging. It was pressed straight to new French oak barrels for malolactic and maturation.
After more than 25 years producing exceptional wine, Lethbridge Wines has achieved a stellar reputation, both within Australia and internationally, with their wines being poured in many of the world’s best restaurants. Not resting on their laurels, Ray and Maree have continued to experiment and innovate and have developed a number of new distinct wine personalities encapsulated under the labels Between Five Bells, il Modo and Nadeson Collis.
Ray and Maree came to the wine industry from academic/research backgrounds in Neuroscience and Chemistry. Their passion for wine led them to pursue an alternate pathway culminating in the establishment of Lethbridge Wines in 1996. Although Ray and Maree already held PhD’s in science their respect for knowledge sent them back to Uni where they achieved their Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) degree from Charles Sturt University.
The Flagship Vineyard in Lethbridge, located 30 km north west of Geelong, was originally planted in 1874 by Swiss immigrants and was replanted by the owners of Lethbridge Wines in 1996. This vineyard is managed using sustainable principles, informed by organic and biodynamic practices.
The Hat Rock vineyard, named after a geographical feature resembling a hat, is located on the Bellarine Peninsula between Drysdale and Portarlington. The vineyard planted in 1996, is a fairly uniform black basalt derived clay soil type.
The historic Rebenberg Vineyard is on Mt Duneed, approximately 10km south west of Geelong, an area first planted with vines in 1858. This vineyard was planted by Ken and Joy Campbell in 1970 initiating the re-emergence of Geelong as a winegrowing region. Initially planted to Semillon, Cabernet, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, most of the vineyard has now been pulled out for housing.
