Vibrant aromas of red fruits, blackcurrant and black cherry lead to an ample and generous palate, with expressive notes of ripe cherry layered with hints of the garrigue, cocoa and liquorice on the elegant finish.
Situated in the heart of the Maury appellation in the Côtes de Roussillon, on clay and limestone soils surrounded by the two ranges of the Corbières. Part of the estate extends under the Cathar castle of Quéribus, on black schist soil; the name of the Maury appellation comes from the local dialect for ‘the black lands’. The shale is beneficial as it stores the heat of the sun and radiates it at night. The Grenache and Carignan particularly benefit from this, and reveal exceptional sugar concentration. The grapes for this wine come from old vines which are carefully selected for their low yields of 25 hectolitres per hectare. The region benefits from the warm Mediterranean climate, which is tempered by cooling sea breezes. The vines are cultivated organically and sustainably; use of sexual confusion of predators is employed as an alternative to insecticides, biodiversity is preserved and the use of cover grass is an important source of organic matter which promotes the activity and biodiversity of the soil. Part of the estate is already certified organic and the remainder is in conversion. The vines are hand-harvested at optimum maturity.
The fruit was carefully selected to ensure only the best grapes were vinified. Each variety underwent fermentation separately with selected yeasts, with a long maceration in concrete vats to ensure the maximum expression of varietal character and the terroir. This cuvée was carefully crafted without the use of oak.

Since his early childhood, Jean Batlle spent time in the vineyards, learning his craft from his father. In 1999, he acquired the Mas de Lavail in the beautiful appellation of Maury, which is located in a valley between the Pyrenees and the Corbières Mountains. Passionate, enthusiastic and meticulous in his work, Jean has been unremitting in his constant quest for perfection from his 95-hectare estate. These days, Jean is joined by his son Nicolas, and together they cultivate their family domain, producing opulent, yet well-balanced wines with a rich aromatic quality.
