On the nose, it is enveloping with intense aromas of ripe fruits, such as blackberry, black cherry, plums and blackcurrant, accompanied by subtle notes of black pepper, toasted coffee and violet aromas. Pleasant balsamic hints emerge such as liquorice and graphite. The palate is vibrant with velvety tannins.

More info

Petra has vineyards in 4 different locations: Suvereto, Riotorto, Piombino and Massa Marittima. Every location has a particular terroir and micro-climate but there are also similar elements which tie the vineyards together. The vineyards face the sea, on hilly terrain with a distinctly calcareous character and rich in ferrous materials which reduces the productivity of the vine giving aptitude for aging but also giving good flavour and excellent propensity for acidity. The characteristic blue clay of the Apennines is present here. This deep clay acts as a water reservoir in the winter and then gradually releases it in the summer months. The yield is low to get more concentrated grapes.

Vinification of the destemmed grapes takes place in temperature controlled 100 hl oak vats (not above of 28° C). Fermentation is induced by selected yeasts. The skins remain in contact with the wine for between 20 and 28 days depending on the vintage and grape variety. The wine then spends approximately 15 months in partly new and second use French barriques before blending.

Petra

In 1996, inspired and fascinated by a trip to the Châteaux of Bordeaux, Vittorio Moretti returned to Italy with a longing to find a suitable area in which to plant the seed of a dream. His quest started in Bolgheri and then moved to a district, between Castiglione della Pescaia and Suvereto, which produces the grapes used in the local wines. In this area, the pioneering vision of Vittorio Moretti and his second daughter, Francesca Moretti, became reality: in 2001 construction of a new winery began, now called Petra. The unique cellar is built into a hillside minimising environmental impact. The estate’s location in the heart of Maremma, means it benefits from a Mediterranean climate with hot summers, mild winters, and significant diurnal temperature variation.
