Complex, generous nose with ripe aromas of cherries and raspberries, light tobacco notes and hints of coffee and cocoa powder. Multi-layered structure with a nicely rounded texture and elegant fruit leading to a very long finish.
Brunello is the driest zone of Tuscany, and has a winning combination of warm days and cool nights, allowing Sangiovese to reach optimum ripeness while retaining acidity and maximising concentration. The result is one of Italy’s grandest appellations, in which Antinori bought this well-sited estate in 1995.
The Pian delle Vigne estate covers a total area of 180 hectares, sixty-five of which are planted with vineyards, which lie at 130-200 metres above sea level, with a clay-limestone soil rich in small stones. Only the best bunches of grapes were selected during a harvest that lasted from September 21st to October 7th.
Destemming and soft crushing were followed by maceration and alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats at 28ºC for three weeks. Malolactic fermentation was completed in the vats, and the wine was then transferred to 30-80 hectolitre oak barrels where it matured for two years before bottling.
