The Quinta da Romaneira Pulga is complex, seamlessly blending the refreshing touch found in Romaneira's white wines with a deep, rich flavour and a classy structure. It really shows off the amazing white grape varieties of the Douro especially when they're grown in the outstanding terroir of the Pulga vineyard.
The soils at Quinta da Romaneira are predominantly schist, with a laminated structure that facilitates drainage and allows the vine roots to penetrate deeply to reach nutrients and moisture. This type of soil is poor in organic matter, which promotes low yields per vine, favouring high quality grapes. The steep slope of the slopes also contributes to excellent sun exposure, ideal for the ripening of the grapes. The average age of the vines is 20 years for red varieties and 15 years for white varieties. The entire vineyard is grafted onto R99, R110 and 1103P rootstocks. Grapes are by necessity hand harvested due to the steepness of the slopes.
100% of the wine is fermented using cultured yeasts in French oak barrels, 60% new, for a period of 21 days. A 4 month period of batonnage follows with a partial malolactic fermentation. The 3 varieties are picked and fermented separately.
Established in 1757, Romaneira is one of the largest estates on the region, with a total of 412 ha and 3 km of river frontage on the river Douro, of which 86 ha are planted. The vineyards are planted on terraces on the steeply sloping hills of the property: with many valleys and promontories, Romaneira contains several microclimates and various slopes with differing exposures. All of the wines are made exclusively from grapes from the estate’s vineyards, a distinctive characteristic of Quinta da Romaneira wines. In 2004, Christian Seely turns his dream into reality, bringing together a group of investors to acquire Romaneira and since 2012 Andre Esteve has been Christian’s sole partner Romaneira has benefitted from very extensive renovation, rebuilding and replanting. A new winery was built in 2005, the long dreamed of opportunity of Christian Seely and the original winemaker Antonio Agrellos, now succeeded by his nephew Carlos, to construct the ideal modern and technical winery in the Douro Valley, starting from scratch allowing the estate to produce wines of the highest quality.
