More info

The ‘Maremma’ is a low lying and marshy area near the sea and is considered an important winemaking region. The vineyard is planted at an altitude of 150 to 180 metres above sea level. The microclimate benefits from mistral winds, which have a cooling and ventilating effect on the vines, imparting natural freshness to the grapes while keeping the canopies healthy. The spur-cordon trained vines are predominantly orientated to the south-east to maximise sun exposure, encouraging the grapes to reach optimal phenolic maturity. The vines are planted at a density of 5680 vines per hectare and benefit from the sandy soil which is rich in sandstone and fairly homogeneous; it is a warm, generally airy soil with good drainage properties. The combination of these factors, allows a slow and gradual ripening of the grapes, resulting in a wine of great freshness and balance. The vines are hand-harvested in three tranches between mid-September and late October.

The grapes were carefully selected and destemmed, with each variety being vinified separately. Fermentation took place with selected yeasts at controlled temperatures, reaching a maximum of 30°C. Vinification took place in stainless steel tanks to retain the purity of fruit and the expression of the Maremma terroir. The wines were deftly blended and matured in stainless steel until the following June; before being gently filtered prior to bottling.

San Felo

Federico Vanni has always been passionate about cultivating the vine and the local rural traditions of his homeland, the Maremma region of Tuscany. In 2001, he realised his dream when he established the San Felo Wine Estate and started creating memorable wines which evoke the flavours of the region. The name San Felo pays homage to his family; his mother Sandra (San), himself (Fe) and his brother Lorenzo (lo). The estate covers approximately 50 hectares, of which 33 hectares are dedicated to the vine, in the beautiful region close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Federico works with local renowned winemaker Fabrizio Moltard, formerly of Angelo Gaja, and together Federico and Fabrizio create stunning wines which are an authentic reflection of the region.
