A light, dry Trebbiano with delicate aromas of green apple and stone fruit, leading to a savoury palate with a delightful mineral undertone and a finish, full of finesse.
The estate is nestled in the rolling hills of Castel San Pietro Terme, near Bologna, in Emilia Romagna, at 75 and 280 metres above sea level. The 250-hectare vineyard is sheltered by the distinctive Calanchi Azzuri, blue clay badlands. These unique geological hilly formations, combined with the region's characteristic seasonal shifts, create a mild microclimate. The vineyards are planted in medium consistency clay soils, interspersed with loamy, gravelly, and sandy sections, encouraging rich biodiversity. Grassing between the vines further enhances this biodiversity. Crucially, the varying carbonate levels across the estates influence the character of the grapes. The higher altitude vines, planted on more calcareous soils, yield wines with greater structure, while the clay-rich lower slopes produce fruit-forward wines. Since the late 1980s, sustainable agricultural practices have been implemented, including the use of weather stations for precise monitoring, integrated pest management, soil microbiology, the application of mycorrhizae during planting, and the use of zeolite on both soil and fruit. The vines for this wine are certified organic.
Innovative and sustainable vinification took place in a combination of spherical concrete tanks and in Cocciopesto amphorae. Cocciopesto is a traditional Roman type of material made from natural or recycled raw materials, such as lime and crushed terracotta. It is natural and protective, with good thermal insulation properties, but does not influence aromas or taste. It does not require firing - only air drying- and as such, it makes it a sustainable and environmentally friendly vessel. Fermentation took place at controlled temperatures with maceration lasting for around 10 days. Ageing in these spherical concrete tanks and Cocciopesto amphorae lasted for six months, with a further three months in bottle.
For Umberto Cesari, producing good wine in Emilia Romagna was a family tradition. It is here that Umberto and his wife Giuliana started their company in 1965, when they bought 20 hectares of land in the hills. Their ambition was to turn Sangiovese into a great wine, reflecting the typicity of the area. The winery has continually expanded and today the estate extends over 355 hectares divided into distinct vineyards; La Casetta, Parolino, Cà Grande, Laurento, Liano, Claterna, Miravalle and Tauleto each of which provides the perfect micro-climate for the vines planted. Their estate is sustainably cultivated and certified sustainable by SQNPI. As pioneers of quality, this family-run estate wins numerous of accolades every year and has been awarded 'IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year' four times in the last 15 years. The estate is now in the hands of Umberto’s son, Gianmaria Cesari, who follows in Umberto's footsteps.
