More info

The finest Sangiovese grapes were carefully selected from the estate's hillside vineyard and picked at their peak maturity level. The vines have an average age of 15 years and are grown in medium textured clay soils, yielding approximately eight tonnes per hectare. Umberto Cesari was one of the first wineries in Emilia Romagna to be awarded the SQNPI, the national Italian quality scheme for Integrated Production. This sustainability certificate recognises the use integrated production techniques in the cultivation of the vineyards, which are tended with knowledge, patience and dedication. Cover grasses protect the soil from erosion and destruction, while encouraging biodiversity. At every stage of the vine’s life cycle the best techniques are adopted, which are always totally natural, to guarantee the plant health and an optimal environment.

Fermentation took place in temperature controlled vats with regular punching down of the cap to extract the desired level of colour, flavour and tannins. The wine was aged for 24 months in 30-hectolitre barrels made from Italian and Slavonian oak.

Umberto Cesari

For Umberto Cesari, producing good wine in Emilia Romagna was a family tradition. It is here that Umberto and his wife Giuliana started their company in 1965, when they bought 20 hectares of land in the hills. Their ambition was to turn Sangiovese into a great wine, reflecting the typicity of the area. The winery has continually expanded and today the estate extends over 355 hectares divided into distinct vineyards; La Casetta, Parolino, Cà Grande, Laurento, Liano, Claterna, Miravalle and Tauleto each of which provides the perfect micro-climate for the vines planted. Their estate is sustainably cultivated and certified sustainable by SQNPI. As pioneers of quality, this family-run estate wins numerous of accolades every year and has been awarded 'IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year' four times in the last 15 years. The estate is now in the hands of Umberto’s son, Gianmaria Cesari, who follows in Umberto's footsteps.
