More info

The Santa Lucia Highlands are a cool, coastal, broadly northeast-facing region of Monterey County. Rainfall is low, while fog and wind coming in from Monterey Bay provide a natural 'air-conditioning' effect. This wine is a blend from the family’s own vineyard, which comprises 14 hectares divided into 30 different blocks and sub-blocks planted at an altitude of 450 metres. The soils are decomposed granite with a high content of schist and quartz. All of the grapes are hand-harvested.

The grapes were hand-sorted then fermented with natural yeast in a mix of stainless steel and oak tanks The wine was aged for eleven months in French oak barrels with sixty-one percent new wood. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Pisoni

First planted by Gary Pisoni in 1982, and now managed by his son Mark, Pisoni Vineyards consists of small vineyard blocks arranged on and around the ridges of the mountainous landscape. Ranging in size from one-half to 17 acres, the vineyard blocks perch at an altitude of 1300 feet in the granite-laced mountains of the coastal Santa Lucia Range.

The Pisoni Family produces essentially one wine per year under this label. The wine is a blend from several blocks on the Estate and is hand-crafted to best represent the vineyard and spirit of the Pisoni Family. Jeff, Gary’s other son, is winemaker.

Gary and his sons are triply blessed: with one of California’s great vineyard sites, with an obsessive attention to detail, and with the good taste to know when to leave well alone and let the grapes do the talking. Specialising in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in Monterey County’s Santa Lucia Highlands, they bottle a single Pinot Noir under their estate label, the rest of the fruit finding its way into their second label, Lucia.
